Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: How Coaching can Empower You

Updated: Nov 8, 2023

We are all blessed with the same human condition, and therefore Imposter Syndrome is alive and well for us all. It can loom large at different times and it's a common feeling that many people, even high-achieving individuals, grapple with. The good news is that you don't have to go it alone. Coaching can be a powerful ally in conquering Imposter Syndrome and unlocking your true potential.

So, what is Imposter Syndrome anyway?

Imposter Syndrome is a psychological pattern in which individuals doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent fear of being exposed as a fraud, despite evidence of their competence. It often plagues high-achievers and can hold them back from fully embracing their achievements. The work of Dr Valerie Young reveals how Imposter Syndrome can show up:

How can Coaching help?

Whether in a 1 to 1 or group setting, there are a number of strategies we use to support people in overcoming their Imposter Syndrome:

  • Self-reflection: We create a safe space for self-reflection, helping you to understand the root causes of your Imposter Syndrome. This awareness is the first step in overcoming it.

  • Challenging negative beliefs: We help you identify and challenge the negative thought patterns that contribute to Imposter Syndrome. By confronting these beliefs, you can begin to reframe your thinking and build self-confidence.

  • Baby steps: We enable you to set clear, achievable goals that support you in recognising your accomplishments and progress. It is tangible.

  • Accountability and curiosity: We hold you accountable for doing what you say you will, inviting you to be curious about what is getting in your way.

  • Celebrate good times: Acknowledging your successes, your forward momentum is key and appreciating that is an important part of the process.

  • Mentorship: Sometimes what is helpful are strategies and guidance when people are stuck. With permission we inhabit this role.

Success Stories

Imposter Syndrome crops up in even the most high-achieving people, so never assume that people don’t have experience of Imposter Syndrome, the truth is that the majority of us have encountered it at some time at varying degrees of intensity.

Sheryl Sandberg has been open about her use of coaching to help her overcome her Imposter Syndrome. She is proof positive that even in cases where people find Imposter Syndrome disabling at times, it is possible to re-programme your mindset.

Here’s what one of the wonderful humans we coach has to say about their experience with Imposter Syndrome:

“As a working professional, mother, and partner, I carried my fair share of insecurities, negative emotions which lead to good ol ‘imposter syndrome’. I didn’t believe I could achieve anything or deserve it for that matter. But with Lou’s guidance, I’m learning to overcome these obstacles and unlock my full potential - using very clever techniques.”

Embrace Your Potential

Imposter Syndrome has the potential to limit your personal and professional growth, as you labour under the weight of a mindset that seeks to undermine you. Coaching is often the catalyst to unlocking a different mindset that transforms your thinking, and in turn your actions.
